Holiday Traffic Safety
With the holidays ahead, many Americans will experience the annual occurrence of holiday traffic. Between 2017 and 2018, there has been a 4% increase in drivers on the road during December. Using this data to predict 2019 travel conditions, WTOV9 FOX has released a helpful list of five tips for staying safe on the roads this season.
One of the very helpful tips focuses on one of the biggest problems with holiday traffic; speeding. WTOV9 Fox encourages drivers to “drive slower and leave earlier.” An often overlooked aspect of holiday planning, this can be very critical according to the NHTSA “more than 9,300 people died from speeding-related crashes in 2018.”
With many Americans traveling to see family and loved ones, “roads near airports and public transportation hubs will be busier.” This means that being vigilant is more important than almost any other time of year and “controlling your speed will give you extra cushion to adjust to more cars on the road.” Increasing “your following distance to as much as 10 seconds” can allow for more reaction time to hazardous conditions.
